whispers of yesterday

Welcome to my writing world

Set against the picturesque backdrop of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, “Whispers of Yesterday" weaves together the threads of two poignant love stories—one that has faded into history and another that is just beginning to unfold in the present day.

McKenzie (Mack) Harper, seeking respite from the demands of her daily life, decides to rent a quaint summer cottage nestled along the rugged Maine coastline. She envisions a peaceful vacation, filled with quiet moments by the sea and the gentle lull of ocean breezes. However, her plans for a tranquil escape take an unexpected turn when she discovers an old, weathered diary tucked away in the cottage. The diary, dated 1947, captivates Mack and draws her into a deeply personal tale of romance and sorrow from decades past.

Rose Degan, a spirited nineteen-year-old woman, pens the diary entries that vividly recount her experiences during a transformative summer. Rose finds herself falling deeply in love with Jacob Evans, a brave and compassionate firefighter from Cape Elizabeth. Their paths cross dramatically on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, as Rose witnesses Jacob heroically participating in the rescue of a collier’s crew after a violent and destructive storm. Despite the intensity of their feelings for each other, Rose’s parents vehemently disapprove of Jacob, creating an emotional rift and setting the stage for a story marked by longing, defiance, and heartbreak.

As Mack becomes increasingly absorbed in Rose’s story, she decides to reach out to Jacob Evans, hoping to learn more about the lovers’ fate. However, Dean Evans, Jacob’s grandson, intercepts her note. Dean, a man with his own complicated relationship to love and family, is immediately intrigued by the mysterious woman who has entered his grandfather’s life through the diary. Dean is also grappling with his mother’s persistent matchmaking efforts—her greatest wish is for him to settle down and give her a grandchild, a pressure he is eager to escape. Seeking a break from his mother’s interference, Dean travels to Cape Elizabeth, unaware that this journey will set in motion a series of events that will profoundly alter the course of his life.

As the summer unfolds, the lives of Mack, Dean, and the memories of Rose and Jacob become intricately intertwined. Together, they navigate the complexities of love, the bonds of friendship, and the enduring power of hope. Through their shared experiences, they discover that the past can cast long shadows, but it can also illuminate the path to new beginnings. “Whispers of Yesterday” ultimately tells a heartfelt story about the ways in which love—whether lost or newly found—can shape and transform the lives of those who are open to its possibilities.
